Delightful Mortain is 7km away. It has an excellent outdoor public swimming pool, numerous small shops and a good supermarket at the top of the hill. Gorgeous waterfalls are close to the centre of the town, and if you go to the tiny chapel at very top of the hill you can see right across to the Mont St Michel on a clear day. Mortain sits at the edge of a huge Regional Park. Slightly further afield (9km) is the bustling market town of St Hilaire du Harcouet, which has a great market every Wednesday. It also has a good sized Leclerc supermarket and numerous other shops and restuarants. The pretty town of Avranches is 30 minutes drive away. It also has an excellent market, this time on a Saturday. It has a busy town centre with lots of interesting little shops. Avranches also has some really big stores on the edge of town.
Once you go a little beyond Avranches, you are on the wonderful Baie du Mont St Michel, with its mile after mile of golden sand and splendid views of the Mont in the distance. Try heading for Genets, where the bay opens out and the beach is huge. The Bec d'Andaine, just beyond Genets, has a big car park and cafe, and you can book a guided walk across the Baie at low tide to the Mont St Michel along the route taken by pilgrims over the past 1000 years.
La Duretetiere Gite in Normandy
The house is very well-equipped and comfortable for a family holiday.
The kitchen is bright and airy, and has a gas/electric cooker, microwave, large fridge/freezer, electric kettle, toaster and so on. It adjoins the dining room, which has a large round dining table, with crockery and seating for up to eight people. There is also a CD player and some comfy chairs, giving an alternative relaxation area to the living room. The living room has three sofas, one of which is easily converts to a very comfortable double bed. There is a TV and video (plays UK videos), and a small video library for kids and grown-ups. The TV can receive French terrestrial channels as well as English language digital sarellite stations, such as BBC1, 2, 3 and 4, BBC News 24, Channel 4, CNN and CBeebies, plus loads of radio stations. There is a stereo system and lots of CDs for you to play. There are several board games and packs of cards. Finally, there is a small snooker and pool table, which can be strangely addictive. The bathroom is situated downstairs, and has a loo and washbasin as well as a full-sized bath and over-bath shower. The main bedroom is also downstairs. It has a king size lit bateau with a very comfortable mattress.
Finally downstairs, there is a huge garage which is home to the washing machine, tables and chairs for outdoor use, a barbecue, games equipment and a few bicycles. The central heating boiler is also in the garage, as are steps up to the unconverted loft area. A fairly steep flight of stairs leads up to the other two bedrooms, which are inter-connected.
Firstly, you come to a room with a double bed, which leads into a larger room with three single beds. All the beds have duvets and pillows, but you are requested to bring your own linen.
To the front and side of the house there is lawn, while at the back is a large orchard (cider apples and plums, mainly), and another field of grass. Feel free to help yourself to whatever fruit is in season. On a warm day there is nothing nicer than taking one of the reclining chairs or a blanket up into the orchard and nodding off in the shade of an apple tree. The owners feel this is a safe environment for children and theirs play freely throughout the garden and orchard. It's worth pointing out that there are a few things you'll need to watch out for (the steps up from the garage to the loft and the old boarded-up well....) and that you are responsible for the well-being and safety of your own children.
Lettings start and finish on a Saturday. Please bring your own bed linen and towels.
